B-roll is that special sauce that makes all videos more enjoyable to watch.

In this post you will learn the difference between a-roll and b-roll,
and 3 tips for using b-roll more effectively

The first step to crafting a story is to figure out what you want to say.
The audio portion of your video is also referred to as A-roll. It is the backbone and the base of the ideas that you are expressing.
B-roll is the footage that compliments your story and bridges any gapsWhen editing B-roll is placed directly on top of the main footage and therefore called B-roll. You can also hide any cuts that you don’t want the viewer to see by adding B-roll on top of the cuts making them less obvious and helps make your story more engaging.

Now that we know what B-roll I want to share with you some tips that will help you use your it more effectively in your videos.

Make sure you B-roll is relevant to the A-roll. What that means is basically show what you are talking about. If you mention a location such as a beach, show a beach. Feelings and ideas can also be expressed with B-roll, for example when talking about connection you want to show people connecting.

Use b-roll to set the tone of your story. By adding quick cuts you are able to make the video seem faster and more upbeat. But adding longer b-roll clips you are able to slow the story down.

Plan your B-roll. When coming up with your ideas think of activities that you could film that would make most sense to the story you are trying to tell you. If your video is about teaching, get some in class footage of your teachers in action. Think about what your interviewees might mention that is relevant to your story and be sure to get footage of that. Include a list of the emotions that you want you viewer to see when watching the video. Do you want them to feel happy? Sad, Excited? The more you plan the more likely you will have the footage that is relevant to your story.
